What is creative thinking? Do you really need it?
Creative thinking is the art of looking at preexistent situations or things in a totally new or different way. A creative thinker is able to approach just about anything from a novel or unorthodox angle. So, a creative user of the mind has the capacity to methodically offer solutions to problems. This is otherwise referred to as lateral thinking, as the techniques employed in the process are haphazard and radically new. How can you tell whether someone is creative? One key attribute is that they do not conform to the norm. They don’t follow tried-and-true routines, neither do they rely on old ideas or concepts. In fact, they are constantly seeking new and more effective solutions.
How creative thinking made me a better salesperson
You might have heard that creativity is a powerful weapon in sales. The goal of every salesperson is to close big deals and enjoy increased revenue. Likewise, being able to sell is a crucial skill for success in business. Not so? Despite having a great experience in tech, I decided to pursue a career in sales in 2020, the year of the Covid-19 pandemic. I might claim that my engineering background exposed me to so much of creative thinking. I have had to solve a lot of puzzles. I have had to mentally investigate many processes to achieve the most plausible outcomes. Perhaps, this was what made me invest so much creative effort in writing sales copies, cold calling, composing emails, writing content for digital campaigns, and even personalizing the sales pitch for each client. The positive outcome is that I can convert 2 out of every 10 prospects.
What successful thinkers do
Thinking creatively will greatly enrich your life. Research shows that one of the problems people have is often wanting to take the path of the least mental resistance. Certainly, the majority of the poor people in the world today become so through mental laziness. They will rather use all available resources than create new realities. Without creativity, there wouldn’t be any technologies like smartphones, cars, architecture, or clothing, to name a few. Successful thinkers persevere until they come up with solutions to problems around them. They continuously vary their trials. If there are difficulties, they figure out how to squeeze through. Of course, they might blunder or fail, but thereby they learn. If you decide today to start acting similarly, you will have a wonderful life.
Age is not a barrier
As most studies believe, mental impairment increases with age. However, sadness and dementia are the two most common mental illnesses brought on by aging. Age does not diminish a person’s capacity for creativity. Not at all! Never accept anything that hasn’t been established to be true. Due to their experiences, old people even have a higher level of inventiveness. They can expand on all of the knowledge they have gathered over the years. Therefore, if you are older, you have a greater ability to create incredible things for the younger generation. That is the truth.
How to avoid thinking burnout
A burnout can result when you keep trying different methods to provide a solution, and none is working. Everyone experiences it. First of all, you need to acknowledge that you cannot solve all problems, no matter how creative you are. If you are getting frustrated by the problem, you may need to take a break temporarily. Don’t overstretch your mental toughness. Don’t work past your “frustration threshold”. Give it a break, engage in other activities or take a nap. Then, get back to it much later. This will reduce burnout significantly.
How to improve your creativity
Truly, when you’re extremely happy, creativity happens. However, sadness can also inspire creativity. Studies show that it rises when both positive and negative emotions are at their peak. Therefore, negativity does not always impede innovation. Enjoy the ups and downs. Learn to intellectually explore all aspects of life. It will strengthen your capacity for invention. Yes, euphoria can inspire innovative thought. Similarly, adversity may be the greatest force for your progress at other times. Your unpleasant circumstances do not impair your ability to think. Additionally, you should constantly learn from seasoned individuals and accomplished inventors. Building off of their experiences is easier. A young person who befriends these individuals (and old people too) is very wise and will succeed greatly.
