Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Valentine Abiji and Engr. Dr. Darlington Ugota met. They were colleagues in another real estate company in Abuja. They hadn’t the slightest idea what the future held for them. But in addition to being professional colleagues, they also became good friends. The pair discovered a rare passion to excel and succeed in each other. And as a result, their friendship was even more solidified.
How Valington Homes and Properties Started
Without a doubt, for anyone with a tenacious will to succeed, there are glimmerings of hope and limitless possibilities. The company’s executive director, Engr. Dr. Darlington Ugota, spoke about how the organization was formed, during a webinar titled IGNITE 1.0. The webinar was hosted by Mr. Samuel Nwankwo. The director said:
“I got a job with a real estate company. They said they were going to pay me 25,000 NGN to become a full-time marketer with them. My interest was not the money. I wanted to know more about what they do in the business.
“We would always create flyers and be sharing in the streets. You meet a lot of people, and they reject it. Anybody who is very familiar with marketing knows that rejection is one of those things you have to develop an attitude of overcoming. Sadly, some people will say you don’t know what you’re doing. Some will like you for some reason. Some will say they will buy, and eventually they will not buy.
“About one month later, I got another offer, still in a real estate company. But this time, it was a higher offer. I had to accept because it was a bigger company. They had more products to sell, and all that. I worked there for a year and six months. And then I met my colleague. He was my friend in the first place where we worked, and we both went to the second place. I told him that we too can start our own company. The knowledge we have about this business can help us start, even without big capital. Let’s get our own office. We will still be selling for other people, but let’s start our own. At least, it will help us to come out fully and know that we are taking responsibility.
“My friend’s name is Valentine and my own is Darlington. God helping us, we coined our names together to have Valington (a portmanteau of Valentine and Darlington). So, that was how the origin of Valington Homes and Properties Limited came. By God’s grace, we worked. We were able to get an office. From one office space, God helping us, our office expanded to two, to three, to four, to five. Starting with just two other persons, now we have about 75 persons working with us. By the special grace of God, except we choose to sell for people, we now have our own.”
In addition, on 6th November 2021, the business partners were each honored with Doctor of Science degrees (honoris causa) in Estate and Property Management. The conferment was done by the prestigious European-American University, Togo. The company’s office address is at Busymart Plaza, 44 Ebitu Ukiwe Street, Jabi Abuja. In a space of two years, they have acquired the following estates in highly demanded locations in Abuja:
